About this Speaker

Jonathan Iliffe's expertise lies in the area of geodesy, and specifically those issues that relate to coordinate reference systems - national or local, on land or at sea.

Projects that he has been involved in include determining OSGM02 for use in the British Isles; the UKHO-sponsored VORF project, determining the heights of tidal reference surfaces across Britain and Ireland; and the development of the Snake projection (which gives near-unity scale factor along very large linear engineering projects such as railways). The latter concept has developed into the SnakeGrid system, now the de facto standard on Britain's rail network as well as being used on other infrastructure projects such as highways and pipelines.

Jonathan is head of the Geomatics Section at UCL’s Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering and heads up the Geospatial Sciences programmes there.
